Peter Berg’s Spenser Confidential is an American action comedy that was released in 2020. It stars Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, Iliza Shlesinger, Donald Cerrone, Post Malone, and Alessandra Williams. Based on the movie “Robert B. Parker’s Wonderland,” Spenser is a former Boston police officer, played by Mark Wallberg, who teams up with Hawk, his no-nonsense roommate, to take down criminals. The film was first announced in 2018 and is based on the 2013 novel by Ace Atkins and follows the same detective series as “Spenser for Hire.” The film was written by Brian Helgeland and Sean O’Keefe.
Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg worked together on several of their recent projects, including the movies “Lone Survivor,” “Patriots Day,” and “Deepwater Horizon.” Winston Duke, who starred in “Black Panther,” plays Hawk in the film. Spencer (Wahlberg) enlists the help of Henry (Alan Arkin), Hawk, and Cissy (Iliza Shlesinger) to investigate the case. Among the individuals who have been accused of framing Spenser are politicians and dirty cops.
The movie begins with the brutal killing of Gloria Wiesnewski, played by Alessandra Williams. Strangled and beaten by three masked men and then thrown inside the trunk of a car, Gloria’s demise resulted from her protesting against a gentrification project. Driscoll, played by Bokeem Woodbring, hired Tracksuit Charlie to torment her into silence, and after that failed, the gang members of the Trinitario gang killed her.
Spenser, an ex-cop and former convict, teams up with Hawk, an aspiring fighter, to investigate the deadly conspiracy. Spenser was sent to prison after he pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer, who he suspects was involved in the killing of Gloria Weisewski, played by Alessandra Williams, a family friend who was protesting gentrification. While in jail, Spencer started studying to be a truck driver in Arizona. After his release from prison, Spencer meets up with his friend Henry who has provided Spencer a place to live along with a new roommate he’s not too keen on. Spencer tries to find the pieces of his life that he left behind while also unraveling the conspiracy that sent him to prison in the first place.
Working with Mark again after so many years was super fun. When I was hired over 10 years ago on Mark’s show for HBO “How to Make it In America” I really bonded with everyone there. I later worked with him again in The Gambler produced by Erwin Winkler, and Mile 22, Directed by Peter Berg, before landing the role of Goria. The 4 Wahlberg project, and a really fun one, being in his home town of Boston, and playing a real life character, based on this Southie Girl who had a hard ending. It was my absolute honor to fill this role!
